Talks on resilience and protracted crises with UNDP administrator Helen Clark

Relief in itself is not the answer – resilience-building is key

FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva with UNDP Administrator Helen Clark

15 September 2015, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met with UNDP Administrator Helen Clark at FAO's Rome headquarters. Their discussion focused on the need to support people in building resilience, in particular in the face of protracted crises.

“The FAO Director-General and I had an interesting conversation on the work that development agencies like FAO like UNDP need to be doing to support people through protracted crises. Relief in itself is not the answer. The answer is investing in the resilience of people to carry on with their farming, to carry on with their basic productive activities. This can be done even in the most dire of circumstances."
