Mimica: FAO is strategic partner to support agriculture, food security and nutrition

FAO Director-General with Commissioner Mimica

16 October 2016, Expo Milan - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met European Union (EU) Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, to discuss cooperation in the fight against hunger.

"World Food Day is evidence that we need to focus on global partnerships to enhance the response to food crises and to meet the Zero Hunger challenge," said Commissioner Mimica. He made the remarks at a global World Food Day celebration in Milan which was also attended by the FAO Director-General.

Agriculture and food security are at the heart of the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Mimica said that “the agriculture sector is the priority sector for EU development cooperation.

“By 2020 we would engage almost 9 billion euros in 60 countries in order to support agriculture, food security and nutrition programs,” the EU Commissioner added.

He noted that the EU is “not an executive agency” and that it sees FAO as “a strategic partner and an important contributor” to the overall implementation of the program.

“We are present together in many countries and what we would like to see is the strengthening of the long-term impact of development programs to build strong resilience especially when it comes to climate change and its impact on food production and security," Commissioner Mimica said.
