Support to improved agricultural statistics in Albania

FAO Director-General meets Albania's Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and Water Management

23 October 2015, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met today with Edmond Panariti, Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and Water Management of the Republic of Albania, in talks focusing on FAO assistance to help the country improve its methodologies for agricultural statistics.

“A sustainable system of statistics in agriculture is one of the issues we want to address together,” the Minister said in remarks following the meeting, noting that responsibility for agricultural data production and processing in his country was recently transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture.

“We need to consolidate the methodology of collecting data and processing it in the right way,” he added.  “Only by having reliable data you can assess the status of agriculture and value if it is progressing, stagnating or potentially even decreasing.”

Minister Panariti also made note of FAO’s “valuable contribution” to the preparation of Albania's Inter-Sectoral Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development 2014-2020 and encouraged FAO to continue providing technical support to the implementation of the new strategy.

He also thanked the Director-General for FAO’s commitment to his nation, noting that the Organization has “always and systematically assisted Albania in developing an inter-sectoral strategy in agriculture,” and for Graziano da Silva's personal drive -- thanks to which the country now has with an FAO office, he said. “This offers opportunities for bringing FAO’s knowledge and expertise to support national agrarian development”.

Graziano da Silva referred to “enhanced programme delivery” as an immediate result of the opening of the FAO office in the country.

During their talks, Albania’s Minister also thanked FAO for its active collaboration in the area of fisheries and aquaculture and, in particular, recognized the importance of FAO’s regional project on “Scientific Cooperation to Support Responsible Fisheries in the Adriatic Sea”.
