Talks with Lesotho's Agriculture Minister

Focus on El Niño effects

17 February 2016, Rome - FAO Director-General Jose Graziano Da Silva met with Mapalesa Mothokho, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of the Kingdom of Lesotho.

The Minister thanked FAO for the continuous support provided in the field of crops, livestock and food security, including in response to the 2012/13 emergency crisis.

The Director-General recognised the fact that current vulnerabilities caused by adverse geography, climate change, HIV/AIDS are now further exacerbated by the El-Nino-induced drought emergency and mentioned that FAO is currently mobilizing resources for the El-Nino-induced drought.

A rapid assessment of the impact of the El-Nino-induced drought has been undertaken under the aegis of Lesotho’s Vulnerability Assessment Committee, focusing on household and community vulnerability. The final report that will be issued this week. A complementary drought impact assessment will also be undertaken for livestock and crops.
