FAO Director-General receives lifetime outstanding achievement award from International Islamic University Malaysia

Recognition of passionate pursuit of zero hunger at global level

11 March 2016, Putrajaya, Malaysia – The International Islamic University of Malaysia conferred its Lifetime Outstanding Achievement Award to FAO’s Director-General, José Graziano da Silva, for the Director-General’s lifetime of work at FAO and his 35 years as a professor in academia and the public sector which has focused on the  fight against hunger. Since its launch 30 years ago, the university has seen 50,000 graduates pass through its halls from more than 100 countries.

In presenting the award, the university’s rector, Professor Dato’ Sri Dr Zaleha Kamarudin, highlighted Mr Graziano’s role in the success of the Zero Hunger campaign in the Director-General’s native Brazil. The Zero Hunger campaign lifted millions of Brazilians out of hunger.

The rector noted that Graziano da Silva has continued his passionate pursuit of zero hunger at the global level since his elevation to the position of FAO Director-General. Upon accepting the award, Mr Graziano recognized “all those who have dedicated themselves to the fight against hunger and malnutrition.”

About FAO Director-General

José Graziano da Silva has worked on food security, rural development, and agriculture issues for over 35 years, most notably as the architect of Brazil’s Zero Hunger programme and now as FAO Director-General.

He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy and a Master's Degree in Rural Economics and Sociology from the University of São Paulo (USP), and a Ph.D. in Economic Sciences from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). He also has post-Doctorate Degrees in Latin American Studies (University College of London) and Environmental Studies (University of California, Santa Cruz).
