Director-General stresses the importance of supporting family farmers in the country

13 June 2016, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met today Kyrgyzstan’s Minister for Labour and Social Development Kudaibergen Bazarbaev. The Director-General said that Kyrgyz Republic was one of the focus countries for the implementation of FAO’s technical cooperation programmes in Central Asia, and that the Organization was seeking to strengthen its presence in the country.

At a meeting at FAO headquarters today, Minister noted that the country had recently launched successful cash for work and cash transfer programmes to reach out to the low –income families.  He added that the government needed FAO’s support and expertise to ensure more sustainable and long-term development, in particular through providing access to new technologies for rural communities.

Graziano da Silva highlighted the importance of supporting family farmers in the country to provide them access to markets, promote local food production and build their capacity to reduce poverty and food insecurity.

Both parties acknowledged the importance of intensifying their partnership in the framework of the FAO South-South Cooperation. According to Bazarbaev, 30 percent of all food produced in the country is lost or wasted, and it is necessary to facilitate the exchange of technologies to tackle this problem.
