Director-General meets President of AGRA Alliance

Talks focus on enhancing African agricultural transformation

José Graziano da Silva today met with Agnes Kalibata, President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA)

27 June 2016, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met with Agnes Kalibata, President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), an alliance led by Africans with roots in farming communities across the continent.

FAO’s Director-General expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by AGRA, under Dr Kalibata’s leadership, to place smallholder farmers at the centre of the continent’s agricultural transformation agenda, and to build systems and tools for driving that process, including provision of quality seeds, improvements to soil health, greater access to markets and credit, as well as other institutions and policies.

Da Silva also highlighted FAO’s focus on Africa, particularly its engagement in the partnerships that are being forged to advance food security and rural development on the continent. He emphasized that providing social protection schemes and creating more local market opportunities were essential steps in the work of making smallholder and family farmers more prosperous and resilient.

Dr Kalibata presented AGRA’s strategy for 2016-2020 and the “Seizing the Moment” campaign for Africa’s Agricultural Transformation.

The two also discussed ways to support the African Union and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development with initiatives to measure and track progress on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme, a pan-Africanpolicy framework for agricultural transformation, wealth creation, food security and nutrition, economic growth and prosperity. This will be discussed in more detail at the 2016 Africa Green Revolution Forum, scheduled for 5-9 September 2016 in Nairobi.
