The Director-General thanks staff returning from South Sudan staff at headquarters and underlines appreciation for their work and support

26 July 2016, Rome - In a meeting to thank staff for their efforts and to reiterate his appreciation of their support to the programme in South Sudan, this afternoon the Director-General received staff working in the country at headquarters.

Cecilia Bonacchi, Emergency Preparedness and Response Consultant, Procurement Associate Martina Cardillo, and Rados Cvetic, Operations Officer, Head of Operations a.i. FAO South Sudan (CSAP), were thanked individually as the Director-General expressed FAO’s continued support for its staff.

The work carried out by the South Sudan team is critical to mitigating a situation that remains on the brink of famine in several parts of the country, and the Director-General stressed that the Organization is proud of this work.

Earlier this month unrest broke out in the South Sudanese capital Juba, and in keeping with standard procedures and the recommendation of the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), non-essential international FAO staff were temporarily relocated from the area.

FAO’s Security Team remains in close contact with our office in South Sudan, the UN Department of Safety and Security, and other UN offices to ensure the careful monitoring of the situation and the safety of remaining staff.
