African Development Bank and FAO to continue supporting investment for rice productivity and better nutrition

29 August 2016, Antananarivo - The Director-General of FAO Mr José Graziano Da Silva met with His Excellency Akin Adesina President of the African Development Bank while both are visiting Madagascar.

The discussion touched on the importance of technologies to transform Africa’s agriculture and help millions of poor farmers to get out of poverty.

Director-General Da Silva mentioned the current collaboration to upscale rice production and productivity in Africa through the Coalition for African Rice Development (CARD) one of the key actors in rice development strategies that sustain African countries’ policies and efforts for increased productivity. President Adesina stressed the need for the continent that relies heavily on importations to bridge this gap.

AfDB President Adesina and FAO Director-General Da Silva agreed on the urgency of actions and investments that need to be implemented for climate adaptation in Africa as countries are facing severe impact of climate change especially on SIDS countries with the current El Niño and La Niña.

Finally, the FAO Director-General and the President of the AfDB agreed to pursue their efforts and collaboration in support to countries in Africa for better nutrition.
