Russia supports FAO’s strategic focus on nutrition, social protection and statistics

Both sides expressed appreciation of the growing bilateral collaboration in different areas

8 December 2016, Rome - FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva, met today with Russia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gennady Gatilov, on the sidelines of the 155th session of the FAO Council, taking place at FAO headquarters in Rome this week.

During the meeting, Mr. Gatilov said that Russia welcomed FAO’s strategic priorities focusing on improving nutrition, enhancing social protection in rural areas and countries’ capacities in the field of statistics.

FAO Director-General and Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister noted with satisfaction the intensified dialogue and strengthened bilateral collaboration.

This year FAO provided technical support to the organization and participated at senior level in a series of important events in the Russian Federation, including the Second World Grain Forum in Sochi and the annual Russian Agricultural Exhibition "Golden Autumn” in Moscow. In its turn, Russia scaled up its high-level participation in key FAO events and meetings.

Gatilov welcomed the endorsement of the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management by the FAO Council earlier this week. This document, providing general technical and policy recommendations, was elaborated on the initiative and with the financial support of the Russian Federation. Both sides emphasized FAO’s efforts to raise awareness about the importance of soils for sustainable development. In this context, they hailed the awarding by the Director-General on Monday of the first ever Glinka World Soil Prize, named after the pioneering Russian soil scientist.
