FAO Director-General Jose' Graziano da Silva meeting with Mr. Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League

FAO and League of Arab States talks focus on regional water initiative, food security

8 March 2017, Cairo - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS), for talks that focused on ongoing collaboration on the regional initiative on water scarcity, including the action plan of the Arab Water Strategy.

Their discussion also centred on the sustainability of the agriculture sector, food security, and the need for collaborative efforts to reduce food loss and food waste.

Graziano da Silva called on the LAS to encourage its member states to sign and ratify the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (PSMA), which entered into force in June 2016. It is the first ever, binding international treaty that focuses specifically on illicit fishing.

The FAO Director-General praised LAS member states for their interest in South-South cooperation inviting them to benefit from the related capacity building and knowledge exchange opportunities. He also noted the importance of developing aquaculture to enhance resilience and productivity.

FAO and LAS will be working together to identify priorities related to two other regional initiatives – one on small scale family farming, and the other on building resilience for food security and nutrition.
