FAO Director-General meets Egyptian President Al Sisi in Cairo

Egypt-FAO talks focus on joint efforts to make food systems and agriculture more sustainable

8 March 2017, Cairo – Egyptian President Abd Al Fattah Al Sisi and FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva met today for talks that focused on some of the country’s sustainable development priorities, including reforms to the cooperatives sector and reducing food loss and food waste throughout the value chain.

They also discussed FAO and Egypt’s ongoing collaboration and the UN agency’s support for the country’s “1.5 million Feddan” desert rehabilitation mega project.

President Al Sisi and Director-General Graziano da Silva agreed on the importance of social protection for rural families and the need for good governance practices to safeguard water resources for agriculture.

They also underscored the need to address the challenges of climate change, which are particularly relevant to the North Africa and Near East region.
