Director-General meets Egypt’s Agriculture and Land Reclamation Minister El-Banna

FAO to support capacity building for agriculture investment in Egypt

09 March 2017, Cairo - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met Abdul Moneim El-Banna, Egypt’s Minister for Agriculture and Land Reclamation, and signed a Technical Cooperation Project to support an investment forum and capacity building for the promotion of agricultural investment in Egypt.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to review FAO’s collaboration with Egypt, and the need to support strategic activities that contribute to the resilience of rural and urban families through small-scale family farming.

Graziano da Silva noted that Egypt’s large population of young people is a comparative advantage for the country with a great potential to boost economic prosperity including in the agricultural sector. In relation to this, he underscored the importance of preserving the diversification of agriculture and adapting to the challenges of climate change and water scarcity.

The FAO Director-General and Minister El-Banna also discussed the importance of expanding Egypt’s successful nutrition program for women and youth to more of the country’s governorates.

They both agreed on the importance of joining forces to guarantee the success of the agriculture investment forum, which they said would benefit from the political commitment of the Egyptian Government and FAO’s ability to provide technical assistance.

Graziano da Silva praised Egypt’s successful efforts to benefit from South-South cooperation, and he encouraged the country to take stock of its capabilities and best practices in order to become an internationally recognized centre of excellence for capacity building in different fields, including in aquaculture.
