FAO stresses Egypt’s potential as a centre of excellence for South-South cooperation

09 March 2017, Cairo - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva during talks today with Egypt’s Minister of Investment and International Cooperation, Sahar Nasr, stressed Egypt’s potential to become a centre of excellence for capacity building through the South-South cooperation.

Graziano da Silva highlighted FAO’s strong support to agriculture-related investment in Egypt, including the development of the agricultural investment map for Egypt, focusing on the country’s grain and sugar sectors, agricultural cooperatives, bioenergy generation and inclusive agricultural development.

He informed Minster Nasr on FAO’s role in supporting the upcoming agricultural investment forum, which will be organized in close collaboration with the Egyptian government, while they both agreed that the success of agriculture investment also depends on other elements such as governance and infrastructure development.

Building on the global recognition of Siwa Oasis as “Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System”, the FAO Director-General also informed Minister Nasr of the multidisciplinary Date Value Chain Development project, and highlighted the growing role of acquaculture.
