First meeting with IFAD's President-elect

FAO Director-General and IFAD's President-elect at FAO HQ today

16 March 2017, Rome - FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva today met Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, President-elect of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), for talks that focused on joint cooperation between the two organizations.  

Both principals discussed ways to support member countries accesing Green Climate Fund resources to better adapt to the effects of climate change, with a particular focus on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). They also commented on nutrition and South-South cooperation programmes. 

Last February Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, former Prime Minister of Togo, was appointed as the sixth President of IFAD, a specialized United Nations agency and international financial institution that invests in eradicating rural poverty in developing countries around the world.  Fossoun will take office on April 1st. 

"This was an opportunity to dialogue on different potential areas of joint work," he said in remarks following the meeting. "It is very clear to both of us that we are going to bring the already very good cooperation to new levels," he added.
