Partnering to empower small farmers

FAO and the World Meteorological Organization to help anticipate and prepare for droughts

19 June 2017, Rome - FAO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) today signed a memorandum of understanding that will see them deepen their cooperation to respond to climate variability and climate change, which, according to the agreement, "represents an urgent and potentially irreversible threat to human societies, natural ecosystems and food security."

FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva and WMO's Secretary-General Petteri Taalas signed an agreement that paves the way for joint work on improving agro-meteorological data, tools and methods and improve access by small farmers to products and services that can help them anticipate and proactively prepare for droughts, entre alia.

Taalas was in Rome to attend a FAO event that seeks to rekindle international cooperation and wider use of existing tools and approaches to pre-empt devastating drought impacts through better preparedness.
