Russian Government to host the FAO European Regional Conference in 2018

FAO Director-General and Russia’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation of the growing bilateral collaboration

4 July 2016, Rome - FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva, today met with Russia’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Gennady Gatilov, on the sidelines of the 40th session of the FAO’s governing Conference.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister confirmed that the Russian Government would host the FAO Regional Conference for Europe  - the Organization’s highest governing body for the Europe and Central Asia region - in May 2018. 

“The major event in the pipeline as part of our collaboration with FAO is its Regional Conference for Europe, which will take place in the city of Voronezh next year. We are putting a lot of effort into its preparation at the moment together with the FAO Regional Office in Budapest,” Gatilov said.

For his part, the Director-General expressed gratitude to Russia for the generous offer to host the biannual regional conference and confidence that this event “would further strengthen the spirit of increased collaboration between FAO and Russia”.

In this context, he also thankedthe Russian Government for successfully hosting the International Conference on Food Safety and Risk Analysis in Sochi (18-19 May, 2017) -  the first global Russian-speaking forum on this topic, which was organized jointly with FAO. The Director-General specifically highlighted the high-level participation and expertise as well as the valuable contribution of the Sochi Conference to the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition and the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN-2).

Both parties expressed appreciation of the growing collaboration between Russia and FAO, in particular, in the Caucasus and Central Asia in the area of nutrition and food systems, including nutrition governance, nutrition-sensitive social protection, and school feeding, as well as fight against antimicrobial resistance.
