Discussions on pressing water scarcity challenges

FAO chief meets Jordan's Agriculture Minister

4 July 2017, Rome - In talks today, FAO Director-General and Jordan's Minister for Agriculture Khaled Hneifat discussed the challenging water scarcity situation in the Near East and North Africa region, where per capita renewable water availability is around 600 cubic metres per person per year - only 10 percent of the world average - and drops to just 100 cubic metres in some countries.

The Minister thanked FAO for the ongoing support to the country and for organizing a joint FAO-Arab League event on water scarcity, where Graziano da Silva praised the countries' progress, despite the challenges, in areas such as desalination, water harvesting, drip irrigation and treating wastewater.

Both principals also discussed ways in which FAO can support Jordan in marketing techniques, including organizing exhibitions for local produce of remote national origin.
