Albania’s Minister of Agriculture praised FAO support in the field of disaster risk management

Talks on the sidelines of the organization's 40th Conference

5 July 2017, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva held talks with Albania’s Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Edmond Panariti, who was in Rome to attend FAO's 40th Conference.

The Minister of Agriculture expressed his gratitude to FAO for supporting Albania’s priorities in the area of agriculture and rural development. In particular, he highlighted a crucial role of FAO in helping Albania to cope with frequent floods.

“We have had frequent floods and FAO was there to assist us with flood management… FAO performed in a very short time and made the assessment of the damages caused by floods,” the Minister said after the meeting. “It was a breakthrough and a real success and I wanted to thank the Director-General for supplying assistance and his personal commitments in making it a big success.”

“With the opening of FAO office in 2015 we achieved tremendous results and we continue to strengthen our cooperation to address challenges, affecting Albania and the region,” Minister Panariti added.

For his part, the Director General lauded Albania’s decision to join the important Port State Measures Agreement, thus establishing a new cooperation platform with FAO.

Among other key priority areas for cooperation discussed by the parties were agricultural statistics in the context of SDGs monitoring, support to Albania’s EU approximation process, and transboundary animal and plant diseases.
