Costa Rican Minister expresses the importance of FAO’s undernourishment indicator

Minister Abraham values appreciates the reflection of a complex and multidimensional reality

9 October 2013, Rome - Gloria Abraham Peralta, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica, expressed the importance of FAO’s indicator of prevalence of  undernourishment (PoU) contained in the State of Food Insecurity in the World report, as it is a reflection of a complex and multidimensional reality. Minister Abraham Peralta emphasized that the PoU indicator reflects the changes of undernourishment figures around the world and encourage FAO to continuing improving this fundamental indicator of the state of food insecurity.

During a meeting with FAO Director General at the Headquarters, José Graziano da Silva and the Minister exchanged views on the future joint work in the framework of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Costa Rica stressed the intention of working jointly with FAO when the country takes over the next Community’s Presidency in 2014. 

During the meeting, the Minister requested FAO’s assistance strengthening research on fisheries at the sub-regional level and in cooperation with OSPESCA and on the phasing out of rice price fixation mechanisms at national level. The Minister also informed the Director-General regarding the appointment of a Costa Rica national expert for the Global Soil Partnership.
