2.8 Per-caput consumption

Since 1950, world food production from fish has increased faster than the world’s population, with the result that per caput food supply from fish has almost doubled, increasing from about 7 kg per year in 1950 to about 13 kg in 1993 (Figure 22). With production from traditional capture fisheries incapable of increasing much, a large part of the future growth in fish production for food will depend on aquaculture.
