1. INTRODUCTION

Following a recommendation of the Working Party on Resources Evaluation (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, May 1984), an ad hoc Working Group was convened to asses the sparid stocks in the Northern CECAF area (Statistical Divisions 34.1.1, 34.1.2, 34.1.3 and 34.3.1)

Funding for this Working Group was provided by the Gouvernment of Spain, following an offer made during the Ninth Session of CECAF (Banjul, The Gambia, October 1984) as part of the Spanish contributions to the Work of the CECAF Programme. The meeting of the ad hoc Working Group was held at the Centro Costero de Canarias of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, from 4 to 8 November 1985.

After brief opening remarks by Messrs J.Bravo de Laguna (Director of Centro Costero de Canarias) and M.Ansa-Emmin (Technical Coordinator and Secretary of CECAF), on behalf of the Spanish Gouvernment and FAO respectively, Mr Modou Thian of the CRODT, Institute Sénégalais de Recherche Agricole, was unanimously elected Cahirman. Rapporterus were also appointed, and details about these, and the agenda, as well as the list of participants, are provided in Appendixes 1 and 2. Documents submitted to the Working Group are listed in the Appendix 3. 1

A list of the species found in the northern CECAF area is given in Appendix 4.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations wished to express its gratitude to the Government of Spain for providing funding for the Working Group.
