FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE ALERTS IN ASIA, SOUTH AMERICA AND AFRICA

The evolution of a pandemic strain of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus serotype O, which has been named Pan-Asia, has recently been described. It was first identified in northern India in 1990 and spread westwards into Saudi Arabia in 1994 and then throughout the Near East and into Europe (Turkish Thrace, Bulgaria and Greece) in 1996. FMD has also been reported recently from Brazil, Argentina and South Africa.

In many developing countries the impact of FMD extends beyond animal production to crop production and transportation

EMERGENCE OF RIFT VALLEY FEVER IN VIRGIN AREAS - SAUDI ARABIA AND YEMEN HIT BY THE DISEASE

For the first time, Rift Valley fever has been confirmed outside Africa, in Saudi Arabia, where it has already caused 16 human deaths and massive abortion rates in small ruminants. The disease was also reported from Yemen, at the border with Saudi Arabia, where people have died of haemorrhagic syndrome and high abortion rates were observed in the cattle and sheep populations. Investigations are under way to determine the origin of the disease and to establish a control strategy.
