FOREWORD

This manual has been developed in the context of the training programme that the Policy Assistance Division, FAO, is implementing in response to developing countries' needs in analytical capacity building. This publication is part of a series of training materials for use in FAO national and regional training activities.

WinDASI is a software developed by FAO in cooperation with the Institut Agronomique Méditerranéen (IAM-M), Montpellier, France. It is a new version of the original DASI computer software, upgraded to the WINDOWS environment.

The software performs financial and economic analyses of agricultural and rural activities in a multi-period context. It allows flexible aggregations of different activities and performs most of the calculations required in benefit-cost analysis of investment projects. It has been tested as a training tool in courses organised by FAO.

This publication consists of a CD ROM with the WinDASI software and its manual. The manual contains instructions on how to install and operate the software, and four step-by-step exercises as practical applications.

We hope that WinDASI will be useful to trainers, agricultural investment analysts and institutions working in the field of food and agricultural development.

We wish to acknowledge with thanks the contribution of all those who have participated in the preparation of this publication.
