CAPE VERDE:

Reflecting irregular and badly distributed rains in August, crop conditions vary by region. Following first rains, which permitted widespread plantings in July, rains were irregular in August. During the first dekad, they covered all islands except Maio. During the second dekad, they were generally badly distributed and remained limited in the traditionally well watered “concelhas” of Santiago island. By contrast, strong rains caused flooding on Sal island. In late August, precipitation remained limited. Maize was emerging/tillering in early August on all islands; crops are now elongating. They are more advanced on Sao Vicente and Brava islands. Replantings have been necessary in several areas of Santiago island.

The pest situation remains mostly calm. Some grasshoppers have been reported in mid-August on most islands, but there is no significant damage to crops. Control operations are underway.
