CURRENT SITUATION

Prospects for the harvest from December are uncertain. Abundant rains from 8th October, following a delay of three weeks at the start of the rainy season allowed continuation of planting operations and provided relief to early planted crops. However, the delay of rains is likely to have caused reductions in the area planted and has left crops vulnerable to an early cessation of the precipitation. In eastern parts, particularly in the province of Muyinga and Rutana, cumulative precipitation remains well below normal and more rains are needed.

Despite an improvement in the overall food supply situation as a result of an increase in production last crop season, the food position remains tight. The food output remained below pre-crisis average, and the economic and commercial activities continue to be restricted by the embargo imposed by neighbouring countries. The food situation is particularly serious for large sections of the population in regroupment camps with limited or not access to land and in areas of persistent insecurity, mainly in Bubanza, Cibitoke, Makamba and Bujumbura rural prefectures, where agricultural activities continue to be disrupted.
