PUBLICATION OF FORESTRY STATISTICS ON THE INTERNET: INDONESIA’S EXPERIENCE

Triyono Saputro1

Introduction

The Ministry of Forestry (MoF) has a huge task to provide data and information for national and international needs

National needs: Center Board of Statistics (BPS), Indonesian State Ministry for National Development Planning (Bappenas), non-government organizations (NGOs) etc

International needs: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) including Joint Forest Sector Questionnaire (JFSQ), Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), etc

Publication of forestry statistics

Forestry statistics book, conventional distribution to users

Electronic data on the MoF website http://www.dephut.go.id/

Electronic data for limited access via the Intranet

Constraints

Lack of skilled human resources on information technology

Slow accessing of the MoF website

Other organizations within the MoF still provide ancillary data on hardcopy only

An integrated forestry database system has yet to be developed
