The Forest Genetic Resources Working Papers report on issues and activities related to the conservation, sustainable use and management of forest tree genetic diversity. The purpose of these papers is to provide early information on on-going activities and programmes, and to stimulate discussion.

This paper is part of a series of FAO publications documenting the state of wild tree genetic diversity in forest- and agro-ecosystems. The study was carried out in June 2002, and was financially supported by a special contribution from the FAO-Netherlands Partnership Programme on Biodiversity.

The designations employed and the presentation of material in this publication do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries.

Quantitative information regarding the status of tree resources has been gathered according to sources, methodologies and protocols identified and selected by national experts and the author, for the purpose of assessing the genetic status and diversity of wild forest trees in countries concerned.

For standardized methodologies and assessments on forest resources, please refer to: FAO, 2001. State of the World’s Forests 2001; and: FAO, 2001. Global Forest Resources Assessment 2000 (FRA2000), FAO Forestry Paper No 140 (2001).

Official information can also be found at the FAO Internet site (http://www.fao.org/).

Comments and feedback are welcome.
