5.1 Future task for silkworm germplasm
resource maintenance
- to stable filial generation, maintain or store the mutation strains;
- to explain the genetic mechanism of gene information and expression;
- to study the new method and techniques for maintenance, management and
multiplication;
- to exchange and manage the germplasm information system;
- to study the maintenance techniques by tissue and cells;
- to keep certain DNA gene fragment;
- to study the gene (or DNA) structure and function;
- and to exploit new materials.
5.2 Specialty of silkworm germplasm
resource maintenance
Maintenance of silkworm germplasm resources is quite different
from some other agricultural gene bank, that is non-Mendel population, but
artificially maintained inside the door by plan. These silkworm germplasm
resources are kept in a few institutes in several countries, and each institute
has its their own special gene bank. In case of failure in one institute, it
will disappear in the world. Therefore, an international cooperation net for
joint maintenance of silkworm germplasm resources might be
established.
