3. Germplasm Database

3.1 Management and utilization of database

Genetic informations of Bombyx mutant stocks maintained in Kyushu University had published as the notebook or the catalogue (Doira et al., 1992; Fujii et al., 1998). Now, it is planning to reconstruct them as the databases with fine photograph (egg, larvae and cocoon and remarkable trait) display the traits in each strain. In NIAS, the database for genetic resources has been opened on Web.

3.2 Descriptors/Stock Characterization

The genetic resources in our institute are arranged with two marks. At first, each strain is classified alphabetically by primary trait described as follows, and Secondary, it is classified in more detail by using double figures (sometimes three figures).

b (cocoon: shape&quality)

c (cocoon: color)

d (egg: shape & chorion)

e (egg: serosa color)

f (larvae: appendage & marking of E allele)

g (larvae: marking)

i (larvae: eye-, head- & tail-spot)

k (larvae: body color)

l (larvae: body color on p loci and S)

m (mosaic & malformation)

n (larvae: body shape)

o (larvae: translucent skin)

p (regional race)

r (chromosomal aberration)

t (growth, voltism & moltism)

u (pupa & adult) w(multi-mutant)

x (new mutant in analysis).

3.3 Samples of germplasm directory or stock catalogue

Certificated traits in each strain are described with gene symbols in the order of egg, larvae, cocoon, pupa and adult.

3.4 Promotion of global sharing of germplasm information

Developing countries are calling for assistance or information in sericultural techniques including germplasm information. On the other hand, maintenance of germplasm for mutations in Japan and Korea is getting difficult due to the decline of sericultural industry. It is timely therefore that FAO and ISC organize this meeting. In order to realize the global sharing of germplasm information, it is necessary to establish working group to discuss rule on partnership for sharing. Since the germplasm information already recorded at each institute are expected that those were written by various format, it will make difficult for users to understand real traits they want to search. While, we have to consider feeling of breeders or founders. Generally, no breeder or founder want to open the information of traits and its process on their established strain. We have to make an effort to know what kind of information are useful for users. At the same time, it is important to know what kind of information breeders or founders can open.. Some problems I expect show in the next tables.
