FOREWORD

Part One of the Report on the World Food Summit: five years later presents a summary of proceedings of the Summit which took place from 10 to 13 June 2002 at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. It includes the Opening and Closing Statements and Message of His Holiness Pope John Paul II to the Summit; Explanatory Notes and Reservation and Reports on the Round Tables, the Multistakeholder Dialogue and the Parallel Events, as well as a list of Side Events. It also contains a list of Participating Countries and Organizations and the List of Documents. It further contains, as an Appendix, the Declaration of the World Food Summit: five years later, adopted by the Summit at the outset of its proceedings on 10 June 2002.

This Part Two of the Report contains the individual statements delivered by countries, intergovernmental organizations and caucuses of civil society organizations. Also included are the written statements submitted in exercise of the Right of Reply under Rule 20 of the Rules of Procedure of the World Food Summit: five years later.

For ease of reference, two indexes are provided, one listing the statements in alphabetical order and the other in the order of delivery. All statements made in one of the five official languages of FAO are presented in that language. All others are presented in English. Following the procedure normally used for FAO Verbatim Records, all statements in Arabic or Chinese were taken from English or French interpretation. These texts are included in addition to the texts in the original language of delivery. Statements are presented in the order in which they were delivered. The Arabic versions, for technical reasons, are to be found at the end of the Report.

The statements were transcribed from tapes and were sent out to countries/organizations under cover of a Note Verbale for their review between 17 June and 20 September 2002. Corrections to the transcriptions received by the Secretariat by 1 October 2002 have been incorporated into the texts presented. Salutations and closing remarks of thanks have not been included for reasons of brevity.
