1. Background

This report is a synthesis of national reports produced by individual countries and presented at a SADC regional workshop on Forest and Tree Genetic Resources held in Nairobi, Kenya in December 1999 and updated for another workshop held in Arusha, Tanzania in June 2000. The report covers 11, generally dry zone countries (Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe) of the 14 SADC countries. It excludes Angola, Seychelles and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where issues are reported significantly different, and which will most likely be addressed in another forum. Other than the country reports, reference was also made to some recent relevant publications.
