ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Many people have contributed to the successful completion of this paper, which proposes a community-based integrated natural resources management approach for implementation as part of the current Extension Programme in Ethiopia. Most notable was Michael L. Wales, Senior Agricultural Economist, FAO Investment Centre, who provided valuable comments in this process and was supportive in the development of my ideas for a community-based integrated natural resources management approach in Ethiopia.

The support provided by officials and technical staff in the Natural Resources Management and Regulatory Department and the Agricultural Extension Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, has been instrumental in the completion of this work. In particular, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Ato Tamiru Habte, Ebrahim Mohamed, Million Bekele, Gezachew Agegaze, Lakew Desta and Daniel Danneno and Hunae Nega. I have also greatly benefited from my interactions with Dr. Belaye Demisse at USAID and Dr. Gete Zeleke, Head of the Amhara Regional Agricultural Research Institution and I extend my appreciation to them. I am also grateful to Mr. Belaye Ejigu, the Minister of Agriculture, for his continued support to the various work in which I have been involved in agriculture and natural resources management issues in Ethiopia.

Special thanks go to Professor Hans Hurni, University of Bern, Switzerland, and to Dr. Ben Sonneveld, Center for World Food Studies of the Vrije University, the Netherlands, for their comments and encouragement.

I would also like to extend my appreciation to my colleagues, Gustavo Best and Jeff Tschirley in the Environment and Natural Resources Service (SDRN) and to Parviz Koohafkan, Land and Plant Nutrition Management Service (AGLL) for their support.

The views expressed in the paper are my own.
