Notes to Table II

The most important factors determining output of raw hides and skins are the animal population, the off-take ratio and the weight per hide or skin. While developing countries hold over 78 percent of the world bovine herd they together produce about 63 percent of the world hide output on a numerical basis, an improvement over the situation in the mid-eighties. As the weight per hide on average is lower in developing countries, they accounted for 54 percent of total output. The widest disparity between bovine population and output of hides occurs in Africa which accounts for more than 11 percent of the world's cattle but for only 4.5 percent of hide output on a weight basis.

The situation is more favourable to developing countries with regard to sheepskins. They provide grazing for 63 percent of the global sheep flock and account for a similar proportion of the numbers of sheepskins produced globally. Again, however, the gap between output of sheepskins in the developing and developed countries widens when expressed in weight terms.

In the case of goatskins the respective shares of developing countries' flocks and output almost correspond at around 95 percent. However, there are considerable discrepancies in productivity in the goat flocks among developing countries, the off-take ratio varying between 28 and 72 percent.
