This table highlights some significant features of developments in the value of the export trade in the hides, skins and leather sector. While the aggregate value of shipments of all types of raw hides and skins of developing countries increased, their share in world exports of raw stock levelled-off at 12.6 percent. Some 80 percent of the value of international export trade in raw hides and skins is accounted for by North America, Europe and Oceania.
The value of leather shipped from developing countries, particularly from the Far East and Latin America, has increased markedly. Developing countries earned US$1 425 million from leather sales in the early eighties, contrasted with US$7 524 million in the late nineties. The developing countries' share of global export values increased from about 34 percent to almost 51 percent.
The value of shipments of leather shoes from developing countries from this sector rose four fold from US$2 883 million to US$11 258 million during the period under review. The degree of penetration of international trade in leather shoes by developing countries grew to 46 percent in the late-nineties, from 29 percent in the early eighties. Europe retained its position as the world's foremost leather shoe exporter in terms of value, although its share fell from 71 percent to 52 percent.
Developing countries increased their aggregate export earnings from raw hides and skins, leather and leather footwear from about US$4 700 million to US$19 400 million during the period under review and their share in the total sector rose from 26 percent to over 44 percent. However, there are considerable regional variations. The Far East has become by far the most important exporting region among developing countries thanks to its success in processing and manufacturing. The relative shares of Latin America and the Near East in total exports declined, as did those of each developed country, with the exception of the area of the former USSR.
