MEDITERRANEAN CONIFERS

During the past decade, seed collections for international provenance trials have been made of 32 provenances of Pinus halepensis, 16 of Pinus brutia, 3 of Pinus eldarica and 10 of Abies cephalonica. These operations have been coordinated by Professor R. Morandini of the Istituto Sperimentale per la Selvicoltura in Italy on behalf of FAO's Committee for Mediterranean Forest Research, with financial support from FAO. Field collecting was carried out by the Forest Research Institute in Athens (Dr. Panetsos) for the Abies, and by forestry institutes in a number of different countries for the pines.

The geographic location and climatic data, where available, of each provenance are listed in Table 1 (Pinus) and Table 2 (Abies). Approximate geographic location is also shown on the accompanying maps. In the case of a number of the pine provenances and all the Abies provenances, seeds from individual mother trees were collected and stored separately.

Seed has been distributed for provenance trials to a number of research institutes, which are listed in Table 3.

For the pine provenance trials, procedures recommended were:

  1. Short-term trials (10 years duration). A minimum of two series of trials, each of single-tree plots with 30 replications. Spacing 3 × 3 m.

  2. Medium-term trials (15–20 years duration). Plots of 25, 36 or 49 plants, with 8 replications arranged in complete or incomplete randomised blocks. Spacing 3 × 3 m.

Seed is still available of some provenances. Enquiries should be addressed to:
