The Seed Bank at the National Tree Seed Laboratory in the U.S.A. has begun a programme of rebuilding its seed inventory of important commercial forest trees. The sources will be defined according to the information available from provenance tests conducted within the U.S.A. By holding only sources that have been demonstrated to be genetically different from each other, the inventory can be kept to its most practical minimum number of seedlots. This helps to control operating costs for the seed bank and aids in planning provenance tests by limiting the choices of material to those provenances demonstrated to be different from each other. It is also hoped that standardization of the sources available will make the results more easily comparable among different provenance tests. Enquires about lot availability and costs should be sent to: National Tree Seed Laboratory, Rt. 1 Box 182B, Dry Branch, Georgia, 31020, U.S.A. Figures 1 and 2 show the sources that have been outlined for Pinus elliottii and Pinus taeda. The seed source maps for other species will be printed as they become available.
