TREE SEED HANDLING
A Manual for Field Staff in Nepal

The National Tree Seed Project (HMG/EEC/ODA) and the Community Forestry Development Project (HMG/UNDP/FAO) in Nepal has recently (May 1986) published a Manual on tree seed handling, intended for field staff in Nepal. The Manual is written by N.B. Shrestha and A.M.J. Robbins. In four chapters it gives a clear and easy to read account of the different stages in seed handling. The titles of the four chapters are: 1) Guidelines for Seed Collection; 2) Seed Processing and Treatment; 3) Basic Rules for Seed Storage, and 4) Simple Germination Testing.

In order to reach the field worker the text has been published side by side in Nepalese and English. The Manual contains excellent and very illustrative drawings of most techniques making it easier to comprehend. In general, the Manual gives a sound base for the dissemination of information to people who need it, and a good understanding of many basic problems and requirements which can actually be met by relatively simple “do it yourself” methods.

Although specifically written for field staff in Nepal, the Manual is of general interest and can serve as an example in the preparation of technical extension manuals elsewhere.

Readers who wish to have further information about the Manual are asked to write to the authors at the
