This book is based on research carried out over nearly two decades and has been prepared over several years. It has drawn on the support of many people both in the research and writing phases. Members of the on-station and field research teams based at the Asian Insitute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, have been critical to much of the work synthesized in this text.
