The Food and agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) carries out regular review and assessment of forestry sector at national and sub national level. The "Strengthening Country Capacity in Forest Resource Assessment for Sustainable Forest Planning in the Asia Pacific Region (GCP/RAS/162/JPN)" project of FAO is working at the regional and country level and reviewing status, planning and database of forests in South Asian countries.
The project is producing a working paper on each of the South Asian countries. These working papers provide current information on the forest resources, eco-socio-political context, forest policy and forest planning processes. The contents of these working papers differ among them due to variation in extent and depth of the information that is available from the countries. However, an attempt has been made to provide maximum uniformity among them. These papers are mainly based on published information but creditable unpublished information that is available at national, regional or sub-national level has also been utilized for developing these papers. The digital version of these papers will be available on the project web site "FAO-CCB.ICFRE.UP.NIC.IN". FAO welcomes from the readers and the users any suggestion or information for improving utility of these working papers.
This report deals with Bangladesh and has six chapters. The first chapter sketches the ecological, political and social governance of natural resources. The second chapter describes condition of forest resources over space and time. The third chapter provides information to visualize forest resources along economic dimension. The fourth chapter attempts to capture variability in the patterns of forest use. The fifth chapter presents the policy and planning framework that directs the management of forest resources. The sixth chapter considers legal regulations controlling the use and management of forests, and examines the capacity of forest department to enforce them and their impact on the social fabric of Bangladesh.
