Additionally to the main FRA 2005 report, the Forestry Department at FAO is planning to publish within FRA 2005 process six thematic studies on selected subjects, which would include analysis derived from country reports, as well as the information, which is already being collected by FAO. The themes for these studies have been selected on the basis of emerging interest that might be included in the FRA 2010 or themes where FAO already possesses a substantial amount of complementary information.
The thematic studies are being prepared and coordinated by subject experts, and the role of the FRA secretariat is to keep the national correspondents informed about these studies. The national correspondent will normally not be directly involved in provision of country data, but some selected countries might be asked to liaise with national experts and to validate country information.
The folders with the information relating to the thematic studies were given to each participant of the workshop, thus inviting them to indicate their interest to help (when required) in their implementation. The participating experts, mainly from the Central Asian countries, expressed their interest to the thematic study on Forests and water, and participants from Lithuania were interested in the thematic study on Ownership of forests and trees.
The focal points (and their contacts) for each specific thematic study were provided, in case the participants would be interested to supply the relating information on one or more required topics.
The thematic studies will cover the following themes:
