ABSTRACT

This document attempts a brief and factual presentation of data and baseline information on the main features of the small-scale marine fisheries of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It could serve as an introduction to the problems and prospects of this sector leading to deeper studies of particular aspects, as a source of general information, or more particularly, as a background document for use in discussions on the planning and programming of development assistance.

This is a revised and updated edition of a General Description of Marine Small-Scale Fisheries, Tamil Nadu, originally prepared in 1977 jointly by the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Fisheries and the FAO/UNDP Project for Development of Small-Scale Fisheries in South-West Asia RAS/74/031. This revision was carried out in cooperation with the Directorate of Fisheries, Tamil Nadu.

Two officers of the Directorate, Mr. V. Ramamoorthy, Asst. Director (Information & Statistics) and Mr. S. Somasundaram, Fisheries Inspector (Statistics) were actively associated with the work.

This paper is an activity of the Project for Small-Scale Fisheries Development of the Bay of Bengal Programme. It is executed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and funded by the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA). It covers five countries bordering the Bay of Bengal Region: Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Its main aims are to develop, demonstrate and promote appropriate technologies and methodologies to improve the conditions of small-scale fisherfolk and the supply of fish from the small-scale sector in the five countries.
