The figure seems to be an overestimate, when compared to other estimates.

This figure has been calculated as the percentage of country surface occupied by the mangrove forests (4.80%)

This figure resulted from the sum of the extent in 1972 (Betancourt, A. 1972) and the mangroves planted since 1980 (25 800 ha).

532 100

Ministerio de Ciencia Tecnología y Medio Ambiente, Agencia de Medio Ambiente, Centro de Información, Gestión y Educación Ambiental (CIGEA). 1999. Situación Ambiental Cubana 1998. La Habana, Cuba. 33 pp.

Mangrove forests cover the 4.8% percent of the total country surface (or the 26% percent of the total forest cover).

Taking into account the report Ministerio de Ciencia Tecnología y Medio Ambiente, Agencia de Medio Ambiente. 2000, (see below) this figure probably represents a typographical error. (532,100 ha instead of 531,100).

1999

531 100

Even if the same figure has been cited by Betancourt. 1972 (see above) it has been entered in this list since it is the governmental information currently used for the country.
