In recent years the demand for reliable data and information and for reporting on aquaculture has greatly increased, driven not only by the need to formulate and monitor sound policies and development plants but also by new information and reporting requirements of international agreements and initiatives, and by the increasing public demand for transparency and accountability. In order to address this need, FAO convened an expert consultation in 2004. This document presents the outcome of the expert consultation, including a draft strategy and outline plan for improving information on status and trends of aquaculture.
