SUMMARY
This document presents the final report of the Eighth Session of the Commission for Inland Fisheries of Latin America (COPESCAL), held in Belem do Pará, Brazil, from 11 to 14 August 1998. The main subjects discussed by the Commission refer to the state of inland fishery resources, the development of aquaculture, the situation of fishery technology, and the marketing of inland fishery and aquaculture products in Latin America; the implementation of the aspects of inland fisheries and aquaculture of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries; and options to strengthen the role of COPESCAL. The list of participants and the updated list of National Correspondents of COPESCAL are included in this report as Appendixes A and D, respectively. A synthesis of the main conclusions and recommendations arising from the debates for the attention of FAO and/or Governments, is presented as Appendix E to this report.
