ABSTRACT
The final formal report of the Committee for Inland Fisheries of Africa (CIFA), held in Blantyre, Malawi, 8–12 December 1980, is presented. Major topics considered were: (1) Management and development of river basin fisheries; (2) Regional inland fisheries programme for Africa; (3) Fishery development in Lake Tanganyika; (4) Development of aquaculture in Africa; (5) Stock assessment, synthesis of information on African river basin fisheries and proposal for a course on fishery appraisal and fishery management for African inland fishery workers. Among the recommendations of the meeting were: (1) To establish a working group on water pollution and fisheries which will also prepare guidelines on the assessment of the impact of resource development on fisheries; (2) To establish two working groups on stock assessment, one for pelagic fishery resources in large lakes and reservoirs and the other for artisanal fisheries; (3) FAO to secure funds for the Regional Inland Fisheries Programme for Africa (CIFA programme) either through the UNDP or other donors and that the CIFA programme and secretariat preferably be seated in one place; (4) UNDP support for the principal phase of the Lake Tanganyika Fisheries Research Project, programmed for the 1982/1986 cycle; (5) CIFA sub-committee be closely associated with CILSS and that the proposed CIFA programme should give priority to the planning of fishery development in the Sahelian Zone; (6) Aquaculture to be considered an essential agro-economic activity and receive adequate human and financial investments. Appendix J includes the list of documents presented to the meeting.
