ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON THE USE OF REMOTE SENSING TECHNOLOGY AND GIS IN FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS

79. It was noted that only a few member countries had experienced the use of such technology in agriculture, either through pilot studies using aerial photography or using GIS, while some member countries which engaged in marine fishing had experienced the use of echo sounding, but were not aware that this technology was a kind of remote sensing.

80. The Commission agreed that remote sensing techniques were very important in providing estimates of crop areas and other agricultural products and in providing information on fisheries and forestry especially during times of emergencies and calamities but the cost of using and maintaining such technologies could not be financed by most of the member countries.
