This publication is part of report series published under the FAO Investment Centre/European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Cooperation Programme. The series presents sector reviews and studies undertaken in Central and Eastern Europe that cover development issues and innovative areas to increase investment in agriculture in the region. This publication addresses issues related to the expansion of ProCredit Bank operations into rural Bulgaria. The ProCredit Bank is one of the financing intermediaries through which the EBRD Group for Small Business is lending to Bulgaria's small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Until recently, most of ProCredit's clients were based in urban areas. The objective of the report was to advise the ProCredit Bank on which rural clients it should target and on the products it could offer to meet the needs of rural SMEs. The analysis can be used by other local or international financial institutions interested in rural credit.
