DEFINITION OF MARINE POLLUTION |
Pollution of the marine environment means: “The introduction by man, directly or indirectly, of substances or energy into the marine environment (including estuaries) which results in such deleterious effects as harm to living resources, hazards to human health, hindrance to marine activities including fishing, impairment of quality for use of sea water and reduction of amenities”. |

ABSTRACT |
This document is the final report of the third session of the CIFA Working Party on Pollution and Fisheries, held in Accra, Ghana, from 25 to 29 November 1991. The Working Party finalized a review of heavy metals in the African aquatic environment; the review is annexed to this report. It is planned to prepare a paper on chlorinated substances in the African aquatic environment during the forthcoming intersessional period. The Working Party discussed its potential role in the preparations for the CIFA Symposium on inland fisheries, aquaculture and environment, scheduled for 1994, and prepared a list of topics of specific relevance for the future development of the region to be covered by the symposium. |
