FOREST GENETIC RESOURCES N.24

XI WORLD FORESTRY CONGRESS

Forestry for Sustainable Development: Towards the 21st Century
Antalya, Turkey, 13-22 October 1997

The World Forestry Congress is organised every six years. The first one was held in Rome in 1926, followed by Budapest (1936), Helsinki (1949), Dehra Dun (1954), Seattle (1960), Madrid (1966), Buenos Aires (1972), Jakarta (1978), Mexico (1985) and Paris (1991). FAO assists the host country in the organisation of the Congress. The FAO Council in June 1995 accepted the offer of Turkey to organise the next Congress. It is expected that the XI World Forestry Congress may have a broader participation and outreach than earlier conferences, considering: the current debate on forests within the follow-up to UNCED and the interest of people from many disciplines and backgrounds in forest issues, the opportunities for broader dissemination and for dialogue provided by electronic communication, and considering that the venue for the Congress, Turkey, constitutes a bridge between two continents and between North and South.

The technical programme for the Congress, after consultation with forestry administrations in all countries, as well as with international governmental and non-governmental organisations interested in forestry and related matters, has been structured in seven main programme areas which follow the seven basic criteria of sustainable forest management (SFM) which are being considered in the various processes (Montreal, Helsinki, Tarapoto, etc.) within the current international debate on SFM. As many of those consulted thought that a combination of a subject matter approach and an ecoregional one would be desirable, a number of sessions will be, furthermore, devoted to SFM in six different ecoregions. The technical programme is thus constituted by 38 topics which cover issues that have dominated the international debate since the last Congress, and new directions in the forestry field and in other disciplines that can contribute to sustainable development in forestry.

The papers to be considered by the Congress are of three types: (i) Position Papers, which will provide a comprehensive review of the situation as regards each of the main programme areas and some of the major issues, to be prepared by specialists who are well known worldwide, at the invitation of the Organizing Committee; (ii) Special Papers which correspond to each of the topics of the Congress, also to be prepared by renowned specialists at the invitation of the Organizing Committee; (iii) Voluntary Papers, to be submitted by 31 October 1996, by any person who wishes to contribute to the discussion of any of the 38 topics of the Congress. Voluntary Papers are planned to be made available electronically in October 1996, Special Papers in February 1997 and Position Papers in May 1997.

The working languages of the Congress are English, French and Spanish, but there will also be simultaneous interpretation, and limited translation of documents, into Turkish and Arabic.
